what i learned from a women in real estate panel

I attended a Women in Real Estate session hosted by Project Destined and WX Inc., with speakers from BGO, J.P. Morgan Asset Management, and ADCO Electrical Corp.

What made the session especially interesting to me was that the conversation focused far more on the technical and strategic side of real estate than the version people usually see online. Topics like investment, development, leadership, operations, risk, and long-term growth were discussed very directly and with a level of depth that made the industry feel much larger and more complex than I had previously understood.

One thing Yi-Shan Huang mentioned that especially stayed with me was the importance of being able to command a room.

That idea reflected something I had already started noticing more and more within professional environments. The women speaking all carried themselves with a very distinct level of composure, awareness, and confidence. The way they communicated, navigated conversations, explained decisions, and held attention felt extremely intentional.

What also stood out was how openly work-life balance and burnout were discussed. Despite operating at a very high level, none of the speakers made the industry sound effortless or glamorous in the way social media often portrays it. Everything was framed through discipline, long-term thinking, and consistency.

The session gave me a much broader understanding of what real estate actually involves behind the scenes and reinforced how interconnected the industry really is with finance, business strategy, communication, leadership, and psychology.

It also reinforced why I decided to begin my journey with Project Destined through their commercial real estate program. The more exposure I gained to the industry, the more interested I became in understanding the business from a deeper and more technical perspective rather than only the visible side people usually associate with real estate.
